About Mark Zakharov (краткие биографические сведения)

 

Mark Anatolyevich Zakharov is a Soviet and Russian theater and film director, actor, screenwriter, publicist, educator and public figure (1).

 

Mark was born in Moscow on October 13, 1933. His mother - Galina graduated from the theater studio of Yuri Zavadsky, but she didn’t become an actress but rather taught in drama clubs. His father - Anatoly graduated from the Voronezh Cadet Corps, joined the Red Army at the beginning of the revolution. In 1934 and 1939 he was arrested and sent into exile (2).

 

His mother introduced Mark to drama lessons from his early years. After a few attempts (3), he entered the State Theater Institute (GITIS) acting department, where he graduated in 1955.

 

Mark worked as a director in the student theater of Moscow State University. It was in their student theater where he realized that he could successfully direct movies. In 1965 Zakharov was invited to the Moscow Theater of Satire. After the success (4) of his directorial work of “Profitable Place” his rapid (5) creative take-off (6) began.

 

Since 1973 Zakharov has been the Artistic Director of Moscow's  Lenkom Theater. His stage settings at this theater became social events in the cultural life of the whole country.

 

His film, "An Ordinary Miracle", where a wizard (7) entertains (8) himself and his wife by creating fairy tales is loved by millions of Russians. The characters of these fairy tales become alive and come to his house to live. One day he turned (9) a bear into a man and decided that the bear would turn back after a princess falls in love with him and kisses him.

 

Other movies are "The very same Munchhausen", “12 Chairs", “Formula of Love", "To Kill a Dragon" and others became the "Golden Collection" of Soviet cinema.

 

For many years he was successfully engaged (10) in pedagogical activity. He is a Professor in the Directing Department of GITIS.

 

His wife was actress Nina Lapshina who died in 2014. His daughter the Honored Artist Alexandra.
